Description Summary: An assistant teacher at The Newtown Discovery Preschool is responsible for working with a lead teacher and in conjunction with the entire faculty to establish and maintain a safe, healthy and nurturing learning environment. Job Type: Full-Time/Part-Time Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Assist the Lead Teacher to create and deliver lesson plans, implement school curriculum, and assess developmental needs of students.
- Manage and participate in a variety of learning activities that provide opportunities for children to develop to their fullest potential and achieve their learning goals.
- Present lessons in a nurturing, curiosity-driven environment that fosters the appropriate developmental stages in children's lives.
- Assist the lead teacher in implementing activities and curriculum that will support and develop self-esteem and social skills.
- Assist children with meal times and clean-up.
- Maintain a healthy and safe environment.
- Communicate on a daily basis with children, parents and staff in a positive, professional manner.
- Participate collaboratively and professionally with other teachers and staff to promote the general well being of the school, and collective/individual interest of its staff and student body.
- Positively interact with students to meet the individual needs to support play, exploration, and learning.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, parent meetings, and other meetings upon request.

Physical Demands May sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk frequently during the day. May stand four (4) to eight (8) hours per day. May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion or more depending on child's weight. Visual acuity to see and read fine prints. Specific vision abilities required by this role include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to hear normal voice sounds. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this role.
Work Environment: Work in a smoke-free internal and/or external environment. Education and/or Experience Assistant teachers must have the following qualifications:
- High school graduate of at least 18 years of age
- Complies with all state education and licensing standards and maintains validation of credentials for the position
- Have at least one of the following: 2 years working experience in Early Childhood, CDA, or degree in Early Childhood Education.
- Previous experience in a licensed preschool or early development center
