Director of Student and Community Relations - Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor - Georgetown University College of Arts and Sciences

Georgetown University's Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor empowers working people to build an equitable, sustainable, and democratic economy through envisioning and creating new resources and strategies. As a labor center in the nation's capital, we convene, research, educate, and mobilize for economic and racial justice and the common good informed by the Catholic and Jesuit traditions of worker justice. We bring together students, workers, scholars, labor and community organizations, activists, policymakers, and allies to incubate new ideas and transformative initiatives.

Job Overview

Director of Student and Community Relations engages not only with Georgetown undergraduates and graduate students, and but also with undergraduates and graduate students from other institutions who participate in Georgetown programs and in relations with Georgetown's Capital Applied Learning Lab (The CALL). Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Conceives and directs community engagement.
  • Conceives and directs all student programming.
  • Recruits and mentors KI-affiliated students placed at The Call.
  • Recruits participants in student programming from both Georgetown and other campuses.
  • Directs community engagement and advocacy efforts related to student programming.
  • Builds alliances with partners outside of the university who receive KI interns or interact with participants in our student programming.
  • Recruits new partners from other campuses.
  • Builds alliances with other universities and liaises with student programmers at other universities who offer labor-related student programming.
  • Directs KI alternative spring break program, Worker Justice DC.
  • Directs KI Research in Action Fellowship; KI Organizing Fellowship and KI-Heartland Labor Capital Fellowship
  • Directs KI's Immigration and Labor Project
  • Oversees and administers KI's Citizenship Scholarship Program
  • Pursues funding in support of student programming and community outreach.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The Director of Student and Community Relations has an indispensable role in the strategic vision and operation of the Kalmanovitz Initiative.

Reporting to the Executive Director on all issues related to engagement with community partners as well as student engagement and student programming for Georgetown and non-Georgetown undergraduate and graduate students, they implement and monitor the internships and fellowships, an supervise all students who partake in the internships and fellowships.

As well, they serve as a liaison between the students and community partners, and to on-campus community efforts; and serves in committees that impact students.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to labor, economics, political economy, or politics
  • At least 5 years of experience in organizing, community liaison work, event coordination, and policy advocacy
  • Experience working specifically with DC-based labor and community organizations
  • Experience mentoring students and directing student internships
  • Fluency in Spanish

Preferred Qualifications
  • An understanding of Catholic social teaching on worker justice
  • A deep knowledge of current labor issues
  • A broad network of trusted contacts in the DC community
